Personal Finance: Three General Tips to Save Money on Streaming Services

Many people subscribe to multiple streaming services these days. When you look at each service individually, they seem pretty cheap. However, if you end up subscribing to four or five, then the monthly cost can certainly add up. This article will explore the subject in greater detail by looking at ways you can save money.

1. Consider which services offer the best value

There is always a danger of subscribing to particular services out of habit as much as anything. However, you should pay attention to how much you use each service because you might be paying for one or two that you are hardly using. So, it's worth going through your watch history and seeing how much you have used a service recently.

If you discover a service you are hardly using, then cancel it and see if you miss it. If you don't, you save money; if you do, you can always subscribe again. Be mindful of how much value you are getting per service each month.

2. Stop the auto-renew to save money

So, the previous point looked at cancelling services you aren't using much. However, the auto-renew option is another trick streaming giants use. If they can rely on you to keep the auto-renew option on, they never have to offer a discount because you are happy to pay full price each month. Although this doesn't work with every service, it's worth going through the cancellation process because you will often be offered a special offer to stay.

In fact, this tip applies to all online services. Remember existing customers rarely get the offers new customers do. Many companies think that once you become a customer, they don't have to work hard to keep you. So, at least put doubt in their mind around your continued loyalty. If you cancel your subscription at the end of the billing period, they may make you a special offer to sign up again.

3. Think about subscription levels

Some services may offer different subscription levels. For example, you may pay a different price depending on how many screens you want to watch on, the quality of the video/audio feed, or the range of content available. It's easy to think you need the top-tier subscription, but that may not be the case.

For example, standard definition video is not as inferior to higher definition as you might think, and if you usually watch on smaller screens like phones, you may not even be able to see the difference. So, again, think about your use of that particular service and consider if the lower-end subscription might work better for you. It's common for users to pay for the top-level subscription without thinking about whether they need it or not, another thing the streaming giants are relying on.

There is no doubt that streaming services individually offer good value for money. However, the cost can become significant if you subscribe to four or five at a time. This article has provided some tips to keep that cost under control. Remember to consider which services offer the best value, stop the auto-renew to save money, and consider which subscription plan is right for you.
